Whats Happening With Marsh

Introduction

With the official closure of Marsh, the end of an era is upon us. While this regional supermarket chain served the Indianapolis area well, many Marsh stores were suffering from poor upkeep and struggling sales. While many Marshes in the Indianapolis area will remain empty, a few that are familiar with Northsiders will be turned into either Krogers or Fresh Encounters thanks to two corporations.

The Bankruptcy

Marsh was 86 years in the running when it filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy back in May of this year. While the exact reason for its failure as a business is certainly a hot-button topic, there is no denying that the supermarket chain faced increasing competition from other food suppliers, including, in recent years, online grocers. After Marsh filed for bankruptcy in May, 44 of its stores remained open with the hopes that they would find a buyer. While these 44 stores survived, Marsh unfortunately had to close all its pharmacies, and it also had to completely close 21 stores.

Northside Closures

Around the time they declared bankruptcy, most Marsh closures in Central Indiana occurred in inner Indianapolis and areas outside of the donut counties, and the Northside was relatively spared. However, there are a couple of Northside Marshes that have closed in recent weeks. The Marsh at 2140 East 116th Street and the O’Malia’s at 4755 East 126th Street, which are both in Carmel, are completely closing. Noblesville is losing its Marsh on Mundy Drive as well. While it may not necessarily be in Hamilton County, the Marsh at 5151 East 82nd Street is probably used by plenty of Fishers residents. It is also closing.

Staying Open as Krogers

While news involving Marsh in recent months is certainly grim for the most part, there are some positives. 23 Indiana Marsh stores have been purchased by two different companies. 11 Indiana Marshes will be converted into Krogers and owned by Cincinnati-based Topvalco, Inc. Both Zionsville Marshes, the one in Boone Village and the one on Michigan Road, will become Krogers. The Fishers Marsh at 12520 East 116th Street will also become a Kroger under this purchase.

Staying Open as Fresh Encounters

Generative Growth II, LLC, which owns a bunch of different brands of grocery stores, can be thanked for saving the remaining 12 Indiana Marshes. They are planning to install Fresh Encounter stores to replace the Marshes. Most of these locations are not close to the Northside, located in areas as far away as Richmond and Greensburg. Still, two Indianapolis Marshes, 320 North New Jersey Street and 11625 Fox Road, will become Fresh Encounters. The same can be said for the Pendleton Marsh on US-36. Northsiders should consider checking out these grocery stores when they open. Fresh Encounter is a relatively unknown commodity in the Indianapolis area.
